SUMMER WATCHLIST

One thing to look forward to when summer arrives is the number of vacations we get to take. And even if we don’t really get leaves, that’s more reason to binge-watch movies every weekend. Growing up, I hadn’t really watched a lot of movies, mostly because I preferred reading books more. But it was only with the pandemic that I started to grow a genuine interest in movies and binged on them day and night. Be it a thriller or a rom-com, there are so many gems to unearth and we come bearing lists!

We have suggestions for a wide range of movies, all different from each other to suit your various moods. So, here we go:

  • Gangubai Kathiawadi: Let's start with our B-town favorites. Bollywood has been pretty laid-back about bringing bouts of women's empowerment to our Hindi film industry a lot of times. But here’s a movie that’s packed with thrills, romance, entertainment, and is really empowering. It’s only after long, long years that we come across such movies from Bollywood. It’s best if we embrace it. The story is as spectacular as the cast, and if you haven’t watched it yet, add it to your list immediately.
  • Sex and the City: Chick flicks have been made really uncool, but there aren’t many women who despise them. They’re fun, light-hearted and filled with jokes about men. Who doesn’t love that? If you haven’t watched Sex and the City yet, this is your sign! A plot about four women, their miseries, their victories, their friendship, and their impeccable fashion sense. After you’re done watching the movie, let us know if you think you’re a Samantha or a Miranda.

  • Girls Trip: Would you love to join Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tiffany Haddish, and Queen Latifah for a drunken weekend of fun in New Orleans? That's exactly what we thought. Unfortunately, it isn't possible, but the next best thing is to watch their hilarious comedy, Girls Trip.
  • Little Women: Based on a classic novel authored by the infamous Louisa May Alcott, this story revolves around a family of four sisters, their mother, and their father, who’s in the army. They go through many struggles in the entire book but always end up finding even bigger reasons to be content and happy. This movie will make you very teary, so keep the tissue box handy.
  • Death on the Nile: Again, based on a murder mystery written by one of the most celebrated authors, Agatha Christie. Agatha Christie’s detective Hercule Poirot is on a mission to guard an esteemed woman on a cruise. One twist after another, the movie ends on one of the most shocking notes, and it will undoubtedly have your jaws wide open.
  •  500 Days of Summer: For those who believe the rom com form is permanently ruined and that nothing new will ever emerge: Get rid of your skepticism. (500) Days of Summer is the sort of film that restores trust in both cinema and love to its audience. Marc Webb's enthusiasm for the project is palpable; he takes a casual approach to storytelling, allowing the film to breathe. He manipulates time and memories in the same way as the mind does while recalling pivotal events in relationships. The fantastic soundtrack simply adds to the enjoyment.
  • Dil Dhadakne Do: Last but not least is this wonderful family drama that touches on a lot of points we never expected from Bollywood. A couple celebrates their 50th anniversary with their families and friends on a 10-day cruise where they face several bouts of drama. The coming together of the family, the vacation spots and the beautiful relationship between siblings played by Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh is a delight to the eyes. Don’t miss this movie for anything in the world!
